Conditions for Operating in Marginal Mountain Areas: The Local Farmer’s Perspective

Agriculture and local food products can have a significant impact on the economic development of rural areas. However, in environments as harsh marginal mountain areas it may be difficult to find right conditions start new production. This study aims present positive negative circumstances for starting operating agricultural activities minor contexts while assuming farmer’s viewpoint. With reference Soana Valley, Northwestern Italian Alps, four semi-structured interviews with farmers been carried out assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities threats. Preliminary results include land availability, lack marketing skills, high level bureaucracy financial overexposure main limitations activity. The adoption quality/origin labels multifunctionality agriculture tourism end market considered potential flywheels by operators. Therefore, policy makers support firstly reducing fragmentation secondly providing technical assistance achieving funding.
